As a parent, hearing the question, “Can I go on a summer program during my summer break?” might at first make you feel uneasy. You want your student to have an experience of a lifetime, but you might be nervous due to safety concerns.
Luckily there are summer programs like ACA that offer a very fun and safe summer experience without the stress of worrying if your teen will be okay.
For parents, there are a few rules you should implement before your teen travels solo on a program.
● Follow your teens social media accounts
● Set location sharing on your smartphones
● Make sure your child is clear on the program’s rules ahead of time
● Have your child check-in with you via text or dm before bedtime
For teens traveling, here are a few tips to convey:
● Keep backpacks or bags completely zipped at all times
● Pack light when going out for the day, leave valuables in hotel room
● Use the buddy system, even if you’re just going to the restroom
● Pay attention to your surroundings, keep your head up, eyes focused while out
● Don’t share your hotel/accommodation location with new people you just met
● Never return to the home or hotel of someone you just met
● Stay with your tour group and counselors
● Follow your program’s rules, they are there for your safety!
● Lock your door at night
Teen travel is such a memorable experience with many life-learning benefits. So next time your teen asks, “Can I go here this summer?” you can feel at ease.
